Central Ohioans Reporting Bizarre Clouds

The phone calls, e-mails and photos started landing in the weather center this afternoon. “What the heck are those weird clouds?” they wanted to know.

These are clouds called Undulatus, meaning they’re wavy or undulating. It’s caused by a combination of strong winds above-but-horizontal-to the surface and localized downdrafts in the atmosphere above. Together, they give the clouds that wavy look.

The rain has begun in Philly’s Center City. Hurricane Irene is on her way. These are the far-northern outer rain bands. Grab your umbrellas!
